Periodic passivation is required to ensure the corrosion resistance of stainless steel products. Stainless steel must first be cleaned to remove surface rust, dirt and oil, rinsed with non-chlorinated water and dried prior to application. But not limited to cleaning of the deck and deck equipment, pool floor, walls, scum line and bathhouse is done daily. Preventive maintenance would include cleaning of the filter media and can include recommended dosages of enzymes. There are products specifically formulated for pools and spas for cleaning. Stainless Steel Stainless Steel is an iron-based alloy that contains chromium, which combines with oxygen to form an invisible protective film on the surface. With proper care, your stainless steel pool rails and ladders will provide years of service. Regularly rinse with fresh water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. You may also use a foam window cleaner, dry and then apply a coating of wax. Inspect and clean mounting hardware, replacing when needed. Rust and corrosion occur when contaminants become trapped and embedded in the protective film. If discoloration, tarnish or water stains are visible, this is the first stage of corrosion wholly on the surface. Common cleaners that can be used: Allen Polish, Acrcal 20, Bon Ami®,Bar Keepers Friend®, and more. These can be found at your local hardware store. Make a slight paste and use a non-abrasive cloth or pad and rub briskly along the polish lines of the steel. Rinse with clean water, dry, apply wax. For extra-stubborn spots (these may scratch the surface): 3M® Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish, Ajax®, Comet®, Goddard's Stainless Steel Care, Old Dutch, Soft Scrub®, Zud Restoro.
